For nano: My character is an elderly man who falls in his (heated) garage. He’s found hours later by a volunteer firefighter who has some EMS training, but is alone & has no gear. The elderly man has pain in his hip (suspect broken). What is my firefighter’s course of action (after calling for backup)? What do the medics do when they get there? Does the elderly man’s hip have to be broken, or could the pain just be a bad bruise or something else?

Hey there! Thanks for your ask.  Last question first: the hip could be broken, bruised, dislocated, …. It really depends on what you want from the injury. A bruise is going to be the fastest to heal. A fracture might take months to heal.  As for what the volunteer firefighter will do…. they’re going to …

I’m doing a piece for NaNo this year, and I was wondering if you could help me. My character, who is currently 22, threw herself out of a second story window after being trapped inside during a fire. She was 13 at the time. She ends up breaking her arm pretty badly, after landing on said arm. What kind of break is plausible/possible, and do you have any insight as to the possible lasting consequences of such an injury? Thank you, any help is much appreciated :)

Hey there!  I would go for a fracture of the humerus, the bone of the upper arm. I would say a displaced humeral fracture sounds about right, which is going to require surgery to set the bone (probably 2-3 days after the fall). She’ll get a splint from EMS (and possibly pain meds), more pain …

Hello there! I have a female vigilante that slips on a wet rooftop while fighting a villain and she falls from a building. I planned on her fracturing her hips (because she lands on her rear/back) and gets a moderate to severe concussion. Is that reasonable? Also, what would the healing process be for a fractured hip be? Thank you so so much! (This is not a NaNo request just so you know.)

Hey there @princessnightwing! Let’s rap for a bit.  Falling off a rooftop is a pretty surefire way to fracture the hip. If she lands on her back, the type of pelvic fracture she’s looking at is an open-book pelvic fracture, which is…. basically exactly what it sounds like. The hips splay wide enough that the …

A guy falls from an unspecified distance, far enough to kill him. What is the minimum distance for someone to fall and die if they don’t hit their head and suffer brain injury? He doesn’t die instantly but lives a minute or two, so presumably is bleeding internally from a major vessel?

Hey there nonny!  Lots of ways to die from a fall that aren’t head injury. Minimum would be one story if the fall broke their neck. Five stories is an almost guaranteed death.  I have seen forty-story fall victims. It was… not pretty.  Causes of death from falling might include:  Bleeding out from multiple bone …
