For NaNo prep!! I know historical medicine isn’t your forte, but I can’t find any info at ALL. It’s 1890. Person A puts laudanum in B’s drink not intending to kill B, but overdoes it and B ends up ODing (possibly passing out?) Person C is also there and has been around morphine addicts and seen ODs. Is there anything C could do to help/monitor B to make sure she doesn’t go into respiratory arrest and/or die? I know there’s no naloxone, but is there anything else to do? B must survive.

Hey there nonny,  You’re right, this isn’t in my wheelhouse, but I’ll take a stab in the dark. It’s perfectly possible for the laudanum to simply knock B out for several (8-12) hours. Laudanum is a much less potent opioid than heroin, morphine, or fentanyl, and it’s being ingested rather than injected. I would say …

Hey! I’ve already looked through your eye injury tag but couldn’t find an answer. I have a character who was slashed across the left side of the face with a sword, rendering her blind in that eye. My question is, would the eye be enucleated or would the eyelid close up and cover the eye? (medieval-ish setting, but with slightly more advanced medical knowledge) Thanks in advance!

Hmmm. You’re talking about an open globe injury. I think what would likely happen is that the eye would be partially enucleated and then the healer of the day would just kinda… go in there and dig out the rest. Stuff the wound with gauze. If they’re super fancy they’ll sew the eyelid shut for …
