Hi, I have a question, if you don’t mind. I have a character who takes a bad beating (which causes some broken ribs, and some other damage if needed) and in the end she’s stabbed in a side, losing quite a lot of blood. She’s also slighlty anemic and underfed, she has been for years, which I guess could make the recovery slower? What damage would it take for her to be kept in the hospital for a week/10 days, and asleep for the first 2/3 days? I hope this isn’t too specific. Thanks!

Hey there nonny! Thanks for the question!  Honestly, I think breaking a few ribs and a stab wound in the abdomen (or side of the abdomen) is enough to keep her in the hospital for a week to ten days, especially if she’s malnourished.  First off, any abdominal stabbing or shooting is going to end …

Hopefully 4th time is the charm? I was wondering if a patient was extremely stressed out by being touched by anyone (except one doctor and one other friend but that still frightens him a bit), would it be logical for them to sedate him whenever washing or performing treatments where touching is required? He’s really sick and badly injured after being rescued from a severe several year long trauma so I imagine they wouldn’t want to freak him out all the time?

Generally speaking, no, he won’t be sedated for procedures like that.  Patients like this are extremely tough. They’re anxious. They make the staff anxious. No one wants this situation. But the answer doesn’t come from a bottle.  The solution is to make the character as comfortable as possible. If he’s able to perform his own …

I have a character (19ish female) who is badly injured in an accident, and I need the doctors involved to decide just to make her comfortable until she dies. (She survives via cyborg tech but yeah.) At what point would the average doctor decide her situation is hopeless? Would certain kinds of injuries prompt that decision? Would her being so young effect that decision at all? Thank you in advance! I love your blog so much it’s so helpful~

Content Warnings: Death, brain death, end of life care, palliative care, neurotrauma Hey there! Good question and I’m glad you’ve asked it!! The word you’re looking for is palliative care, by the way, which means lots of pain management and making someone as comfortable as possible. It’s usually discussed around patients with terminal illness, as …

Hi! i have a character who has several broken ribs, many deep cuts in his back, a severe burn on his chest, and just all over bruises, along with a degree of exhaustion. i know these things on their own probably wouldn’t warrant a hospital stay of longer than a night, but would it be longer for all of them together? would he still be released within a couple days if he was still in extreme pain from all this? also would he have to lie on his stomach if the wounds to his back were severe enough?

Hey there nonny! We haven’t talked overmuch about polytrauma on this blog, mostly because it’s a very complicated and there’s a lot of “it depends,” but let’s dive in to your scenario and see what’s the what.  It’s true that, with one exception, no one injury you describe would necessitate admission to the hospital for very …
