Hello! My character suffered food-borne botulism poisoning, is brought to the hospital with troubles breathing and a start of paralysis, but the doctors have already been alerted. How would the healing go in the most optimistic way and how long would it take to recover fully? Does he feel any sensation or pain while paralyzed and/or react to pain or make small motions like moving fingers or looking around? And being on a ventilator at first, could he happen to be awake while on it? Thanks a lot!

Y’know, most of the time, one of my very favorite resources on medical things is a website called UpToDate, which a kindly physician granted me access to.  But then I opened the “botulism” page, and it started talking about botulism neurotoxins as potential weapons of bioterrorism and the countries that may or may not have stockpiles …

I have a character (19ish female) who is badly injured in an accident, and I need the doctors involved to decide just to make her comfortable until she dies. (She survives via cyborg tech but yeah.) Thank you in advance! I love your blog so much it’s so helpful~

Hi! i have a character who has several broken ribs, many deep cuts in his back, a severe burn on his chest, and just all over bruises, along with a degree of exhaustion. i know these things on their own probably wouldn’t warrant a hospital stay of longer than a night, but would it be longer for all of them together? would he still be released within a couple days if he was still in extreme pain from all this? also would he have to lie on his stomach if the wounds to his back were severe enough?

Hey there nonny! We haven’t talked overmuch about polytrauma on this blog, mostly because it’s a very complicated and there’s a lot of “it depends,” but let’s dive in to your scenario and see what’s the what.  It’s true that, with one exception, no one injury you describe would necessitate admission to the hospital for very …
